November 3rd—Election Day!

As I was helping my 92-year-old neighbor fill out her ballot this morning, I thought of the many elections she has participated in over the years. I was also inspired by her civic commitment.

Today we celebrate one of our most fundamental civic duties—voting for those who will represent us in government positions.

It has been encouraging to see broad participation in this election with large numbers of ballots already cast. If you haven’t voted, I encourage you to make your voice heard. We have convenient ballot boxes located throughout the city.

2020 has been a challenging year in so many ways and if nothing else, has highlighted how important governance is for this country’s health and well-being. Election Day is when the power fully shifts where it belongs: to the people. This is our day to choose and it is both an honor and a duty that I like you, hold dear.

As with all contests, there will be winners and losers. Regardless of the outcome, I hope we all show our best selves. For as Abraham Lincoln said, “We are not enemies, but friends.” Even in disagreement, we all possess the gifts our Founding Fathers gave us: freedom, liberty and democracy. God bless this great nation and each of you.
