Construction is anticipated to get underway as early as March 4, 2019 on both the Bulldog Boulevard and 500 West roadway safety projects. Provo City has been working closely with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) on these two projects since 2017. We want travelers in Provo to be aware of the project impacts and improvements so that they can plan ahead to avoid delays.
In addition to rehabilitating the road surface, both of these projects offer improvements to make it safer for all kinds of road users, including pedestrians and bicyclists. I know many folks are tired of road construction, as we’ve had a lot recently, but I want to share my appreciation for our great Public Works Division and our partnership with UDOT to help make our streets safer and more accessible to all kinds of roadway users including pedestrians and bicyclists. Keep reading for all the details.
Bulldog Boulevard:
The Utah Department of Transportation and Provo City are partnering on the Bulldog Boulevard project between 500 West to Canyon Road. For a list of improvements and to review the design please visit www.provo.org/bulldog.
The contractor will begin with signal work then transition into road construction. The following activities are planned:
Placement of intersection signal bases, conduit and concrete work.
Construction of roadway shoulder.
Asphalt removal and replacement.
Construction of median and landscaping.
Intersection work is planned to take place in one intersection at a time and move from west to east (500 West to Canyon Road). Shoulder work will occur on both sides of the roadway, with traffic initially shifted to the middle lanes. Expect lane closures and traffic configuration changes throughout the project. Intermittent access and driveway closures are also expected to occur. A more detailed schedule will be available in early March.
Construction is anticipated to last up to six months during the spring and summer of 2019. Work may occur during the day and night, and the contractor will be allowed to close lanes during work. A more detailed schedule will be available after construction begins.
500 West:
UDOT is adding improvements on US-89 (500 West) between 500 S. and Bulldog Boulevard. For details about the project visit www.udot.utah.gov/go/provo500w.
As early as March 4, crews plan to reduce traffic to one lane in each direction with traffic shifts planned throughout construction. Hours of operation for this work are Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm. Construction is expected to last eighteen months, with completion in August 2020.
